LIGHTNING STRIKE KILLS YOUNGSTER
One boy was killed and another injured when they were struck by lightning yesterday evening while playing baseball in Spotsylvania County.
Chelal Matos, 12, a Chancellor Middle School student, was pronounced dead shortly after he was taken to Mary Washington Hospital, said 1st Sgt. Liz Scott of the Spotsylvania County Sheriff's Office.
According to Scott, the umpires had halted the game because of the storm, but the two boys were playing catch on the field under the supervision of their parents. Scott said the lightning struck Matos, and the charge then transferred to the other boy.
This is a tragic reminder of what can happen if we do not follow our severe weather policy. Always return to your automobile when there is lightning in the area.

Register Now: Atlee Baseball Camp (June 22 - June 25)
Atlee Summer Baseball Camp will be help June 22nd through June 25th at the Atlee Youth Sports Complex. Hanover High School Coach Charlie Dragum and his staff will conduct the camp for children ages 6 to 14. Camp will run from 9 am to noon each day and the cost will be $125. Registration form is here.

Did You Know? - Heat Index Policy
Did you know that Atlee Little League has a Heat Index Policy? With warmer days ahead, Atlee monitors the combination of temperature and humidity to determine if heat conditions impact the safety of the participants. If the combination index reaches 95 degrees, games may be postponed or suspended due to high heat conditions. On hotter days, participants are encouraged to begin hydrating at least 24 hours before the start of their game. For best results, a combination of water and sports drink (Gatorade, Poweraid, etc) should be consumed at a mixture of 1:1 and at a minimum of 20 ounces. Please consult the web-site or hot-line for daily updates on complex conditions.
On May 8th Atlee Challenger will be travelling to Norfolk to participate in the 4th Annual World Jamboree. Challenger Baseball is for players with physical and mental disabilities. Thanks to to Atlee Little League Community for donating time and money to make this trip a reality for these players and their families.

2008 Junior All-Stars Honored by Hanover County
On December 10th the Atlee Junior League All-Stars were recognized by the Hanover County Board of Supervisors with a proclamation that reads, in part:
"The Hanover County Board of Supervisors does hereby recognize with sincere appreciation and admiration the high honors that the Atlee Junior League All-Stars have brought to themselves, their families, and to Hanover County, and salutes them on their outstanding achievement".
