Atlee Little League Welcomes Challenger Division
Usually the Little League World Series is the only time you get parents and kids lined up against the fence to watch a little league game when they don’t know any of the players. But that was the scene at Atlee Little League last Saturday, April19th for the inaugural Challenger Division baseball game.With over 24 players and numerous volunteers and buddies, Atlee Little League hosted its first Challenger Division game this past weekend during the league’s Opening Day festivities. The Challenger Division is for children in 1st-12 grades who have either physical or mental disabilities. The division gives them an opportunity to enjoy baseball when they have only been able to watch brothers, sisters, neighbors and school-mates play in the past.
“Over the years a number of things have been accomplished at Atlee Little League...I think the new Challenger Division tops the list,” says former Atlee board member Mike Lowry, who has volunteered with the league for over 10 years.
The players also enjoyed improved field to use for their games including new dugouts and a sidewalk to assist wheelchair players.
“When we set our mind to do a Challenger Division back in the fall, we wanted to ensure we did it first-class,” says division director Steve VanHuss about the new amenities. “Without question though, it is all about the players. Plus, the volunteers and sponsors in the area have really stepped up to assist the players.”
The Atlee LL Challenger Division will play at the Atlee LL Complex each Saturday morning at 8:30 through May 17th. The league maintains open player registration and is always in need of volunteers.
