To register as a volunteer, please contact Challenger Division Volunteer Coordinator, Bill Wilson at or 368-0345.
Atlee Little League Challenger Division started play in the spring of 2008 and we are looking forward to the upcoming 2010 season. The Challenger Division enables boys and girls with physical and mental disabilities, ages 5-18 or the completion of high school, to enjoy the game of baseball with neighbors, friends and the nearly 1,000 other children in the Hanover community who participate in Atlee Little League.
Who: Teams will be set up according to abilities, rather than age, and can include as many as 10-15 players on a team. The Challenger players will wear baseball uniforms, hats and safety equipment, as all other Atlee LL players. Our Challenger baseball players will compete with other Challenger Little Leagues in the Richmond Metro area.
When and Where: Regular season games will be played on Saturdays mornings from mid April through early June. Home games are played on Field 7 at Atlee LL from 9am until 10am. Away games will be played on Saturdays with times to be announced. District 5 sponsors an all star celebration for all players at the end of the season and a date/time will be announced. Also, the league will also host an end of the season picnic celebration to present trophies to the players and thank all sponsors and volunteers.
Volunteer needs: Atlee Little League is hoping to solidify 22-30 volunteers for each home game. This will allow each player to have a “baseball buddy”, whether on the field or in the dugout. This will also allow the parents of the players to sit back and enjoy all the action of the game. Volunteers can sign up as a group or as individuals.
What is a baseball buddy? Baseball Buddies are volunteers that help their challenged partners by acting as guides for blind children, by pushing wheelchair-bound children around the bases, or by helping them bat or field the ball. While it is perceived that the “baseball buddies” are there to assist the players, it is widely-known that it is usually the players’ interaction that enriches the lives of the volunteer.
Thank you for your interest in providing support for the Atlee Little League Challenger baseball. It is a truly rewarding experience for the players, parents and volunteers to enjoy the great American game together.
